I see you've met my faithful handyman...

My first time in a Rocky Horror audience was in Marysville, CA. Bored theatre staff stood in the balcony and threw bags of ice at the weirdos below. I remember being hit in the groin by one of those ice bombs. Better memories came with my move to Sacramento. In college, my new friend Noel, so straight-laced, so bookish (or so I thought) invited me to Rocky one night where his roommates --Lurch and DeeAnn-- were in the cast. (And Noel sometimes played Brad.) Lurch played Frankfurter and it was months of seeing him in persona in his black wig, makeup, garters and heels before I actually saw him out of costume. I went to see them in Rocky as often as I could, often bringing my plain-jane friends (as Noel had done) with an exhilarated sense of accomplishment; like bringing a virgin to the sacrifice. Somewhere I still have the picture of me in my tan cardigan, fresh from work at Sears, slumped in my chair looking up with dopey eyes as a lingerie-clad cast member, in character, stood over me pointing fiercely. Ah, memories. And decades ago.

Now Lurch and DeeAnn are bringing back Rocky Horror screenings to Sacramento. Every Friday, as part of their Movies on a Big Screen project. Check out the details here. Or get them off the poster above.
